Engaging with Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients (frontline staff)

Designed specifically for  those working on the frontline in healthcare, learn how to communicate more effectively with people who have a hearing loss or communicate using British Sign Language (BSL). Knowing that frontline staff are often dealing with people in their most vulnerable states, this course is here to give you some tips for communication and understanding into the perspectives of those with a hearing loss.

With over 30 years of experience working within the Deaf community between them, Jessica and Tim bring essential knowledge from their work in advocacy, training and technology as well as their own lived experience to work with you creating the most effective environment for communication.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing people are facing worse outcomes when accessing primary care some of which can be addressed by changing attitudes and increasing awareness.

We will also discuss the impact of COVID19 on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and how some simple adjustments can be made to increase accessibility.

Within this course we will discuss the following;

  • Understanding deafness, who sees themselves as Deaf, deaf, hard of hearing or hearing impaired. Hear from Deaf people regarding their experiences when trying to access GP services and their feelings around public perceptions of hearing loss.
  • Understand how to create a culture of equal access to communication within the surgery.  Some basic communication tools and tips, including basic Sign Language, to be used in person and throughout your communications.
  • Information about technology and aids that can make your surgery more accessible, as well as information about specific services for people with a hearing loss.
  • Legal responsibilities under The Equality Act 2010 along with advice on how to fulfil your legal duties.

The course is fully interactive and requires input from participants. It will be delivered on Zoom and certificated.
